Attention BlueCross BlueShield of SC Individual Policy Holders

The affects of Healthcare Reform on individuals in South Carolina has already begun.

In response, Sandhills Insurance Group is sending letters to individuals this week advising them of recent developments with BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.  The letter below includes the content of both grandfathered and non-grandfathered policy holders.

Dear BlueCross BlueShield Individual Policyholders,

Hope this letter finds you well.  In the coming months you will be faced with many confusing benefit, premium, and administrative changes as the implementation of the Affordable Health Care Act draws near.  As your agent, I will guide you through this challenging process.  Here’s what you need to know at this time.

  • If your policy is non-grandfathered and has an effective date between April 1, 2010, and September 15, 2010, your coverage will expire on the policy anniversary date in 2014.  At that time you will need to purchase a new, qualified health insurance plan and we look forward to helping you with this.
  • If your Personal Blue SE policy is non-grandfathered and has an effective date after October 1, 2010, your coverage will expire at the end of August 2014.  This means you will be able to keep your current BCBS of SC plan coverage through August 2014.  You will need to purchase a new, qualified health insurance plan by September 2014, and we look forward to helping you with this.
  • If your policy was purchased prior to April 1, 2010, your contract is grandfathered, and you are not required to make any changes.  Blue Cross Blue Shield of SC will continue to insure you in the future.  This allows you to maintain your current benefits into the future and keep your current coverage, provider networks, and age rated premiums with very minimal changes.  You will find this to be very beneficial from a coverage, usage, and premium standpoint.  Keeping your existing grandfathered policy maybe more advantageous because of the new rating system and additional required benefits potentially costing you more.

This is an extremely complicated law with governmental guidelines coming out and changing on a daily basis that have to be interpreted and implemented, a difficult task we strive to keep up with for you.  We look forward to helping you and servicing you in every way possible making sure your coverage, access to quality care, and the service you are accustomed to with Sandhills Insurance Group, continues.
